MODOT responding to issues with sealing projects

The Missouri Department of Transportation is responding to issues with sealing projects along Missouri roadways.
District Construction & Materials Engineer with MoDOT, Mary Miller, says the fault lies in the oil used in the sealing being reactivated by rain.

"I think due to the environmental conditions with the high humidity and the cloud cover and then the oil being wet from just the rain that we've had for the past few weeks.  Once in started raining that afternoon, it reactivated the oil - even though people had been driving on it all day just fine.  When the rain came, it reactivated the oil and it started picking up on people's tires."

Miller says the contractor has changed the oil they use in paving, now using the same oil used by MoDOT for several years.

"We did change the oil that we're using.  We're using a faster cure oil now to hopefully avoid those problems.  We're also leaving the lanes closed until we're sure that the oil is cured out.  We're trying what we can to make sure that this doesn't happen again."

Any motorist affected by the recent sealing projects should contact MoDOT, the contractor for the project or their insurance company Travelers. If contacting MoDOT, email at nwcr@modot.mo.gov with your name, the area where the sealing project took place, a daytime phone number, and your preferred email address.
